I will admit; I don't watch the news or read the newspaper. I seriously do not have the interest in that type of media. And because of that, I'm usually unaware with a lot of things. I know, I should keep up with the current events; but don’t you all just get tired of hearing “bad news” on the news all the freakin’ time? It is usually about murder, war, celebrity gossips, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
Just because I don’t watch the news or read the newspaper doesn’t make me completely clueless about current events. The most common source people use nowadays is the Internet. But, I don’t read news articles on there for fun either. If my homepage were Yahoo! or MSN, then I’d probably read an interesting article under the Today section. Since my homepage is Google, there’s nothing on there except the word Google with pretty font and a search bar. So where do i really get my current events from? Facebook.
The latest event that I found out on Facebook was the tragedy that happened in Japan. My wall was completely spammed with, “OMG! Japan is going crazy!” “My prayers goes to the people of Japan.” I then decided to search it online, but nothing new about Japan was on the Internet, since the tsunami had just started during that time. So I decided to post my own status asking, “What’s going on in Japan?” All answered with, “Turn on the news, its on every channel.” I was shocked from what I saw.
There’s also this other website that I always go to. It’s called 9gag where a bunch of people upload tons of pictures of Internet fads. People kept posting images of Egypt and the Internet like the two below.

I was confused, I didn’t know what was going on. I didn't get any of their jokes. The funny part is, instead of looking for a news article to read online, I went on Facebook and ask my friends; their short answer were, “they want a revolution and their leader down.” Then I decided to read about what was going in Egypt, and I was surprised how late I was. I had no idea that the revolution has been going on for awhile and that had to be one of the most important events going on. That’s what I get for not watching the news or reading the newspaper lol.
Why don’t I just turn on my T.V. in the first place? I rely on the Internet for everything just like many other people around the world. I gather all my information from there. The Internet provides everything from social connections, games, tutorials, music, and a whole bunch of great stuff. Soon after any major incident, there will be a rapid spread of information from people by posting videos, blogs, and articles all over the Internet. Who ever invented the Internet is just brilliant. It made our lives so much more convenient; its just so darn useful. Come to think of it, I should Google the inventors of the Internet lol.
Good job on writing this blog, you write in a way that is creative and interesting. I totally understand your not wanting to watch the news because it shows all the negative things that go on in life and in the world. I once heard someone say, “Good news is no news”. This sadly is usually the case with the news. It is tiring to always hear of the bad things going on, but this is the “dramatic” and “shocking” stuff that catches people’s attention. People seem to like conflict, drama, and death, after all, our movies are filled with it. Who wants to see a movie that is completely lacking the “bad news” and instead only shows the positive and good things in life?
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that you hear big news first from facebook. I think many people our age do not watch and read much news, it is interesting though that the social network is also a news network! It is true that the internet is a great source of information (though there is a lot of junk there too that we still need to sift through).

Hello Lene!
ReplyDeleteAll of the things you mentioned in this week’s blog is surprisingly similar to my outlook on this topic. Just like you, I rarely watch TV or read newspapers -- I simply think it’s inefficient, compared to the Internet. The social network (facebook) is usually where I get my first notification on major events, from my friends. I think it’s the only news worth spending time on. I believe that 70% of the nonsense on the news is ridiculous, who cares about gossip and celebrity’s lives -- it doesn’t make an impact on my life, it just reminds me how crazy this world is. That being said, I don’t deny that people are capable of horrific things, it’s just that it’s irrelevant to be constantly reminded every night. I think watching the news everyday will probably make you go insane, and scared.
I agree that the Internet has a really great community for getting the word around, the news spreads really fast via the Internet. The Internet has a whole sub-culture withing itself. It has forums, social networking sites, news websites etc -- there are tons of ways to spread the word around if people utilize the Internet.
